Welsh Government funding will help protect Cardiff homes from flood risk

Homes in the Rhiwbina area of Cardiff are set to benefit from increased flood protection as a result of additional funding from the Welsh Government.

Minister for Natural Resources, Alun Davies has confirmed that a £1.3m flood protection scheme in Rhiwbina designed to protect over 180 homes at risk of flooding will go ahead thanks to an allocation of nearly £700,000 from the Welsh Government.

The flood defence scheme will also benefit from over £450,000 from the European Regional Development Fund and over £121,000 from Cardiff Council.

Minister for Natural Resources and Food, Alun Davies said:

"There is no doubt that flooding is on the increase, and the severe weather experienced in Wales earlier this year only served to reinforce the importance of Welsh Government, Local Government and communities in Wales working together and taking action to protect at risk properties.

"Strengthening flood defences is a major priority for the Welsh Government and in recent years we have significantly increased our investment in this area, despite cuts from the UK Government. This Assembly term alone we are investing more than £240m of Welsh Government money in flood defence improvements, along with an additional £50m from Europe.

"A report earlier this year indicated that our investment in flood defence is making a real difference, as despite the extreme weather at the beginning of the year, less than 1% of at risk homes in Wales actually flooded.”

"

Since 1990, ten separate incidents of flooding have been recorded in relation to Whitchurch Brook . Homes located in the northern area of Rhiwbina have fared the worse with over a dozen properties flooding internally more than once.

A report by Cardiff Council has estimated that in a 1 in a 100 year flood event, 187 properties are currently at risk of flood from Whitchurch Brook, and that long term, damage would cost in excess of £4.5m if nothing was done to mitigate the risk.

Cardiff Council intends to implement phased improvements to reduced flood risk from Whitchurch Brook and this new funding allocation will enable the first phase to begin in the Rhiwbina area.
